For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Luke 12:34, NKJV
Christians sometimes confuse the cause and effect logic of this verse, which is identical to Matthew 6:21. The Bible does not say that your heart will determine your treasure but that your treasure will determine your heart. The word translated “treasure” here is thesaurus and may refer to any storehouse of valuable items. Many people are familiar with Roget’s Thesaurus, a reference book by Peter Mark Roget, who stored up fifteen thousand words.
When we store up our treasures in heaven, our hearts take flight and we begin to soar high above the dusty terrain of our fallen planet. Aim your affections, interests, and passions at a higher target and watch as the things of this world lose their grip on you. Your generous support of Christian causes will not make you rich on earth, but it will redirect the desires of your heart so the riches you cherish are eternal.
