Best Friends

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24, NIV

Dean was my closest childhood friend. We played basketball and tennis for hours. We would ride our bikes all over North Dallas, miraculously surviving without helmets or cell phones. We both wrote for the school paper, sang in the choir, and shared a weakness for the literal and satirical humor in the screwball comedy Airplane. Surely you must have seen the movie.

One day Dean invited me to church. During a very confusing time, I was searching for truth, hope, and meaning. Dean was there to help me see that I could find all these things in Jesus. Popularity is overrated. The person who seems to have a million friends may not truly have one. Though I never had a brother, when I needed one, I had a friend who stuck even closer.
